Chaos After The Global Citizen Festival Likely To Impact Tourism

December 03, 2018

Radio Islam International – 2018/12/03

The chaos which ensued at the end of the Global Citizen Festival will likely impact the tourism sector following harrowing and traumatic stories circulating on social media of revellers getting mugged of their cell phones and belongings.

The event at the FNB stadium in Johannesburg attracted crowds of over one-hundred-thousand people on Sunday night.

However, the incidents which occurred after the event overshadowed the entire spectacle which sought to raise funds for humanitarian and health issues among others, honouring late Apartheid struggle stalwart Nelson Mandela.

Concert goers took to twitter this morning, expressing their dismay at the lacking presence of policing officials at the end of the event after they were mugged by criminals who grabbed their cell phones as they were trying to catch lifts home.

MMC for public safety Michael Sun told Radio Islam that victims need to come forward.

“It’s a terrible thing that could happen to anybody, what we need to do is that we are calling up on those who are affected to come forward and go to the police and lay a proper criminal charge so this matter can be investigated.”

Seven suspects have since been arrested in connection with the crimes.
