Owning a house is a human right. This was the sentiment expressed by Samsung and Habitat for Humanity South Africa as ten houses were handed over to ten families in Lawley, south of Johannesburg.
The initiative forms parts of the 2018 centenary celebration which marks what would have been Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday.
The official handover of the new homes which were built by Temi Construction took place at a ceremony in Lawley on Monday where the home owners were presented with their house keys after the ribbon cutting ceremony.
Samsung Chief Executive Officer Sung Yoon says partnering with Habitat for Humanity is the perfect opportunity for the company to help build South Africa.
Yoon says Samsung wanted to use the Mandela Centenary celebrations to give something back that will significantly change the lives of disadvantaged communities.
“I’m so proud of my team and I’m so proud of Samsung’s participation on this initiative. Samsung will continue to support this as part of all the initiatives.”
According to Statistics SA, South Africa is one of the world’s most unequal societies with approximately 12 million South Africans living in extremely poor conditions with the current housing backlog in excess of 2 million units.
Gauteng Human Settlements Dr Elias Sithole says owning a house is a dignity.
“We want to thank Samsung and other stakeholders for this kind of partnership. I think for us, this kind of initiative is a good start. I think other companies out there, they will actually learn from Samsung.”
The work done by Habitat for Humanity in partnership with corporates such as Samsung has already resulted in the construction of 100 homes this year, with Lawley the latest initiative.
