The South African Government has welcomed the decision by South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir to pardon South African national William Endley, as a gesture of peace.
Endley, an ex-South African National Defence Force (SANDF) colonel, was sentenced to death on 12 February 2018 for espionage and conspiring to overthrow the government.
Kiir announced the release of Endley during the National Peace Celebration in the capital Juba on Tuesday.
Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Lindiwe Sisulu says Endley is expected to be released Thursday and will return to South Africa soon.
”We extend our gratitude to President Kiir to release one of our own to once again spend time with his family.”
