Durban Beaches Temporarily Closed After Dead Whale Washes Ashore

October 30, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 30-10-2018

The eThekwini Parks and Recreation department says beaches between Umdloti and Umhlanga, north of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal will be closed after a decomposed whale beached near Peace Cottage north of the oHlanga River.

It’s understood heavy winds may have contributed to the 15 metre whale washing ashore on Monday.

The department says this is second incident after a sub-adult humpback whale washed up on Pipeline Beach in eManzimtoti six months ago.

Spokesperson Thembinkosi Ngcobo says they are working around the clock to remove the whale’s carcass.

“There was a whale that washed up. This is normally a huge operation depending how fast it can be done depending on the conditions. Hopefully we may be able to expose of it by early this afternoon. So hopefully the beaches will be open either this afternoon, if not tomorrow.”
