A doctor who was part of the medical team that performed surgery on a Palestinian activist has told Radio Islam he expects the youngster to make a full recovery.
Mohamed Tamimi underwent surgery at the Sandton Medi-clinic on Monday for horrific injuries inflicted by Israeli forces in the Palestinian village of Nabi Saleh, northwest of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.
Tamimi was put into a medically-induced coma after Israeli soldiers shot him in the face with a metal encased rubber bullet during a protest against a US decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
It’s understood the bullet entered the teen’s face below his nose and broke his jaw before getting lodged into his skull and leaving him with a large defect.
Dr Jameel Desai says the team including plastic surgeon Dr. Ridwan Mia, anesthesiologist Dr Hizir Mukaddam and fellow maxillofacial surgeon Coelette Smit that operated on Tamimi are among the top medical professionals in the world.
Desai says Tamimi is responding well to the surgical treatment.
“Insha’Allah we are expecting that he will actually make a full recovery. We are very encouraged by what we are seeing already. These Palestinian children are resilient like you cannot believe, they are positive, they are strong.”
The Royal House of Mandela commended the entire medical team on a job well done saying they are proud examples of South Africans who give real expression to Madiba’s spirit of sacrifice and caring for one’s fellow man especially the most vulnerable amongst us.
