Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub: “Data Doesn’t Disappear”

October 18, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 18-10-2018

Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub says data doesn’t disappear but rather how consumers use data.

Joosub was speaking at the My Broadband conference at the Gallagher Estate in Midrand on Thursday.

While the Competition Commission has started hearings about the cost of data and how it can be reduced in Africa’s most advanced economy, there have been a number of complaints from users who say their data disappear on a monthly basis.

Joosub says there is a lot of consumer education around data usage including Vodacom’s Data Wise initiative which assists users manage their data better.

“Simple thing, close your app, because if you don’t close the app, it’s chowing data. That’s just reality, so that’s the one part. The second part is that the networks are becoming so much faster. If you had an hour two years ago versus an hour now, you’re consuming three, four times as much data in that same hour. That’s how much faster the networks have become.”

Joosub says in some African countries like Kenya, users can opt for a slower network to conserve the data that they are allocated.
