[LISTEN] Dr Adam Hanieh: Foreign Funding Allows Palestinian Politics to be Controlled

September 20, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 20-09-2018

Palestinian author, activist and Middle East expert, Dr Adam Hanieh has told Radio Islam the dependence of the Palestinian Authority (PA) on salaries from the West allows them to be controlled by countries that are funding the government.

Hanieh is visiting South Africa as a guest of Workers world Media Productions, a NGO that deals with issues that affect workers and the Working class in South Africa and across the globe.

Hanieh will be delivering the keynote address at the Abdulhay Ahmed Saloojee memorial on Friday.

He says while the US has cut funding to the PA, the organisation relies on other western countries for financial support.

Hanieh however says the funding allows these western states to control Palestinian politics.

“If you re dependent on these financial inflows from outside, from western states, than for a large proportion of your working population to receive salaries and so forth, it gives you a particular say over the politics of the Palestinian movement.”
