Johannesburg Emergency Services has urged residents to stay indoors as much as possible during a heatwave expected to hit Gauteng.

The South African Weather Service says the province will experience the first heatwave of the season this week with the mercury expected to hit 36 degrees in some parts.

The heat wave conditions is expected to last until Wednesday.

Joburg Emergency Services Robert Mulaudzi says residents must stay hydrated during the scorching temperatures.

“Residents are urged to stay cool and make sure that they avoid exposing themselves to this extreme heat because it can cause heat exhaustion, heat cramps and also heat stroke. Keep hydrated by making sure that they drink lots of water.”
