NGO Stop Trafficking says South Africa is a lucrative hunting ground for child traffickers and child kidnapping.
The organisation was commenting on figures released by the South African police service missing person’s bureau for 2013, which shows that a child goes missing every five hours in South Africa, and that 1.2 million children are trafficked every year in the country.
According to the stats, while 78% of the children are recovered, the success rate among adults is only 53%
Stop trafficking’s Bertha Bresler says there are three classifications for a country to be deemed a hunting ground for child traffickers.
“There are source countries, transit countries and destination countries. So South Africa, because we have so many points of entry met all three, so that means people can be trafficked from, to and through South Africa. So yes, we would say, it is a lucrative hunting ground for traffickers.”
Bresler says open lines of communication is vital for a child’s safety and while the public wants to create awareness about child kidnapping and trafficking, posting unverified information can cause more harm than good.
