City of Joburg Working on Restoring Services After Eikenhof Explosion

August 28, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 28-08-2018

The MMC for Environment and infrastructure in Johannesburg says City Power officials have managed to save one of the three transformers at Eikenhof Power station.

It’s understood a transformer at the power station exploded just after 1 pm on Monday afternoon affecting electricity and water supply to consumers in parts of western Johannesburg, the West Rand as well as Rustenburg in the North West province

The transformer is owned by Johannesburg City Power and is part of the electricity facility supplying power to the Eikenhof Pumping Station.

MMC Nico de Jager says City power has a transformer at its Ruven depot which it will transfer to Eikenhof sub-station.

“We started with the reconnection of that second transformer. But it also means it’ll take another 12 hours before we can stabilise the supply of water. We say latest tomorrow morning for water and power to be restored.”

De Jager says repair work will continue after the restoration of services.
