Divorce scuppers Indian woman’s Hajj dream

August 08, 2018

Radio Islam News | 08 August 2018

In a most inopportune marital spat, an Indian man divorced his wife just two days before their scheduled flight for Hajj, scuppering a cherished pilgrimage dream.

According to the details of the incident published by the Siasat Daily, the wife had borne the expenses for the Hajj trip of herself and her husband. Their flights were booked and were set to depart on August 7. A few days ago, the husband divorced his wife which resulted in the Hajj trip being scuppered.

It was reported that the couple had been experiencing marital turbulence for some time. The wife had expected that Hajj pilgrimage would soften the heart of her husband but her expectations were dashed by her husband’s abrupt pronouncement.

The Telangana Haj Committee referred the case to local Islamic authorities for guidance. Scholars at Jamia Nizamia ruled that by the husband’s pronouncing of “Talaq” three times, divorce had already taken place, thereby meaning the woman cannot leave her home until the expiry of the Iddah period.

As a result, the Telangana Haj Committee was forced to cancel the former couples’ seats for Hajj.
