A University of Cape Town Professor says a kidnappings suspected kingpin arrested in Thailand could be possibly part of a bigger syndicate involved in the abduction of high profile and affluent businessman in South Africa.
Momade Assife Abdul Satar, who goes by the name of “Nini”, and dubbed “Mozambique’s most notorious assassin” was arrested in Thailand last week.
Satar entered Thailand three years ago shortly after being freed on parole from a Mozambique jail for the 2 000 gangland-style murder of an investigative journalist in the capital Maputo.
‘IOL reported that According to highly placed police sources, Satar is alleged to have recruits in Cape Town who carry out kidnappings.
Professor Rami Sayed from UCT’s Political Studies says he has no doubt that Satar may be linked to the kidnappings of businessmen in South Africa.
“I don’t have a doubt about that as well. At the moment, I think while evidence is entirely clear, but there are a lot of the same issues that happened in Kwa-Zulu-Natal and around Maputo and these different areas. They seem to have the same characteristics.”
However at the same time Ml Nazier Loonat from Mozambique says while there is no evidence that Satar may be the source of the kidnappings, many are aware that he is involved in the abductions.
“I am talking officially, there’s nothing proved through courts. But we know that everyone knows through Southern Africa that he’s the main guy. So we think that the process of kidnapping is going to go down.” (sic)
Thailand has extradited Satar as the crackdown deepens on foreign gangsters using the Southeast Asian country as a bolt-hole.
