A human rights lawyer says while there is widespread gender-based violence against women, there are many men who are also subjected to abuse.
Ferhana Ismail was speaking during the launch of the Gender-Based Violence Campaign in Johannesburg on Tuesday by the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa together with the Islamic Care Line.
The campaign seeks to highlight the high growth of gender-based violence within South African and Muslim communities.
Ismail says statistics show emotional and physical abuse against men is shocking.
“My recent experience shows that one in three men are experiencing, emotional and psychological violence and abuse. Let me take it one step further, one in seven or eight men are experiencing physical violence in their relationship within our Muslim community.”
Ismail has shattered the norm that men are not supposed to shed tears, however, she says during consultations, men do cry when they recollect the abuse and violence against them.
