A 36-year-old man has been arrested after a handmade explosive device was found at a mosque in Roshnee near Vereeniging.
It’s understood community members were praying at Masjid Taqwa on Monday when they noticed the man who was not known to the community leaving his bag behind after the prayer.
The Roshnee Neighbourhood Watch (RNW) handed over the bag to the security office where it was discovered it contained a handmade explosive device.
Police say the unknown man returned to the Mosque on Tuesday where he was apprehended by the Roshnee Neighbourhood Watch and handed over to police.
Spokesperson Fikile Funda says the man is expected to appear in court soon.
“The neighbourhood watch that took the bag to the security office went and investigate what was happening, only to find that there’s a handmade bomb that they found there. The preliminary charge that we are investigating is possession of suspected handmade explosive.”
Funda says the motive for the incident is being investigated.
