NGO Save the Vaal has raised concerns about the pollution of the Vaal Dam saying municipalities must be held accountable for the disaster.
The organisation says the problem of raw sewage and other pollutants being dumped into South Africa’s largest dam is an ongoing problem for many years.
Pictures being widely circulated on social media show the shocking state the Vaal Dam is currently in.
Save the Vaal’s Chris Williams told Radio Islam the E-coli in the Vaal River, Vaal Dam and Barage Dam is more than a million times over the 400 parts per 100ml safe limit.
Williams says the effect of the pollution has now reached a critical stage with a number of factors to blame for the disaster.
“A lot of agricultural run-off, acid mine drainage, illegal mining and property development and sewage plants which are too small and badly maintained.”
Williams says a 150 million litres of raw sewage and human waste in rivers and dams are extremely hazardous and killing off a number of specifies of fish including affecting life stock that drink water from these sources.
“Cautiously warn your listeners to be very careful and alert the Halaal butchery and friends about this because it can be really hazardous and affects every community.”
Williams who listens to Radio Islam’s fishing program Screaming Reels says people should be aware that a number of species of fish are dying in the river which could affect it for years to come.
