The Executive Director of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation says late former President Nelson Mandela was clear on the significant role the Indian community played in the struggle for freedom.
Neeshan Balton was speaking during the launch of the 100 Memories of Madiba book by renowned journalist Fakir Hassen on Mandela Day at Killarney Mall on Wednesday.
Balton says Madiba demonstrated important lessons and the strength of South Africa’s democracy by his willingness to work with people who were even opposed to him.
“And that is where Malema and others fall short. When they say that Indian’s are racist because they didn’t vote for black parties, they would’ve had a case had they said that Indians improved that they voted for an ethnic party like Rajbansy’s party. Than they would’ve had a case, which is why we have disagreed with Malema.”
Balton says there are new role models that represent a new generation of progressive Indian people who need to form a common future with African people.
