India on collision course with water crisis: report

June 20, 2018

Thahir Asmal, Radio Islam News – 20-06-2018

India is facing its worst-ever water crisis with around 40 percent of the population set to run out of drinking water by 2030.

According to government advisory body, the Composite Water Resources Management report, around 600 million Indians were facing high to extreme stress over water shortages, warning that conflict and other related threats, including food security risks, were also forthcoming unless actions were taken to restore water bodies.

“Critical groundwater resources, which account for 40 percent of our water supply, are being depleted at unsustainable rates.”

The report indicates that 40 percent of the population will have no access to clean drinking water by 2030.

It adds that more than 20 cities, including New Delhi, Bengaluru and Chennai, will run out of groundwater by 2020, affecting 100 million people.
