The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) has agreed to share information with the Somali Embassy in South Africa and committed itself to foster greater social cohesion among communities.
The MJC says it has long-standing relationship with the Somali community and its leaders in South Africa and recognizes the role and invaluable contribution of the Somali community toward fellow South Africans and the economy.
The Muslim body met with the Somali Ambassador to South Africa Jamal Mohamed Barrow on Monday where both parties condemned the brutal killing that took place in the Malmesbury mosque on 14 June.
Two worshippers were stabbed to death and two others were wounded while the assailant was shot dead by police after he apparently tried to attack officers.
The MJC’s Mishka Daries says the meeting reconfirmed its commitment to moderation and peaceful coexistence.
Daries says from the observations made by members of the Somali community, and those at the Malmesbury mosque, the perpetrator Noor Abdullah, was acting strangely and appeared to be mentally unstable.
“They discussed various aspects including that the Somali community believes the occurrence that as much as it happened in Malmesbury seems to be an isolated incident.”
Daries says both parties will be working with SAPS and the Hawks in order to cooperate as much as possible and to ensure that peace and stability remains in South Africa.
