Relief for Residents as Power is Restored to Lenasia

June 06, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 06-06-2018

Johannesburg MMC for environmental and infrastructure services Nico de Jager has confirmed that power has been restored to certain areas in Lenasia affected by outages.

Residents of Extension 9 and 10 blocked the K43 with rocks and burning tyres on Wednesday morning to protest over a lack of electricity and continuous power interruptions in these areas.

De Jager says the power outages was caused by a trip at the Nirvana power station in Lenasia which was a direct result of overloading, cable and fuse theft.

“I also just want to state for the record that the protest action has now been resolved because electricity has been restored except for all the factories, that’s not been restored as yet while we’re fixing the problem.”

De Jager says they are looking at solutions for the current electricity crisis in Lenasia by securing the mini sub-stations including continuing the electrification project of Thembelihle informal settlement by bringing more people on board.

“What I’m going to appeal to the team is that we have security structures around our mini-substations as we have been doing elsewhere to protect and to secure the mini-sub and from any form of vandalism.”
