Is Dr Aafia Siddiqui Alive?

May 28, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 28-05-2018

Rights group Defence of Human Rights Pakistan says rumours about Dr Aafia Siddiqui’s death has caused a lot of confusion and pain for the people of Pakistan.

Reports circulating mainly on social media earlier in May claim that Siddiquie had died in prison.

Chairperson of Human Rights Pakistan Amina Masood Janjua says Pakistan Consul General in Houston Aisha Farooqui met with Siddiqui at the Federal Medical Centre, Carswell, a US federal prison in Fort Worth, Texas, for female inmates of all security levels with special medical and mental health needs.

Speaking to Radio Islam on Monday, Janjua says rumours about Siddiqui’s death are not true.

“She went personally to Carswell Prison and she met Dr. Aafia Siddiqui and the meeting was two hours long and after that she confirmed that Dr. Aafia Siddiqui is alive, but there was no video that was made. They were not allowed to take any pictures or video of that meeting.”

Janjua says Siddiqui is not in very good health.

“She’s not in a very good condition at all. She’s suffering from many diseases. She has throat cancer and it spread all over. She is extremely pale and she has no connection with the family and she has extreme anxiety and depression.”

Siddiqui, a MIT graduate and neuroscientist, was sentenced to 86 years in prison on 23 September 2010 by a court in New York after she allegedly snatched a gun during interrogation in Ghazni in Afghanistan and tried to shoot a US soldier.

She has also been accused of working for Al Qaeda.

Earlier this month, Pakistan rejected media claims that Islamabad had agreed to swap Dr Siddiqui for Dr Shakil Afridi, who helped the CIA find Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad.
