[LISTEN] Ml Ebrahim Bham Explain Why We Muslims Fast in Ramadan

May 25, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 25-05-2018

As we enter the second week of the blessed month of Ramadan have you ever thought about why Muslims fast? What’s the reason for fasting?

Muslims fast during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar also known as Ramdan. Fasting commences before the beginning of dawn and ends at sunset.

Prominent scholar and Secretary General of the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa Ml Ebrahim Bham says while Ramadan is not only about fasting, fasting is an integral part of the this holy month.

Ml Bham says while there are many reasons for fasting, the most important being that Allah has made it compulsory upon Muslims to fast so that they can attain taqwa, mercy, compassion, kindness and sympathy for the poor.

“Nabi (SAW) said, he who fasts in the month of Ramadan with imaan, with faith and seeking Allah’s pleasure, Allah will forgive his past sins.”

Ml Bham says during the month of Ramadan, Muslims experience a sense of heightened spiritual awareness, which includes being more cognisant of abstaining from food, evil and sin.

“In fasting there is no physical joy, there is a spiritual joy. The Angels ask Allah ‘how do we record the reward of fasting and Allah tells the Angels, Oh my Angels, don’t record it, you can’t record it. Fasting is for me, I will give the reward myself. Brothers this is the reason we fast.’”

Ml Bham says Nabi (SAW) said: “In Jannah there is a door known as Rayyan and only those that keep fast will be allowed to enter through that door.”

Ml Bham has urged Muslims not to take fasting lightly as there are many benefits to this sacrifice which is loved by Allah SWT.
