Why Are South Africans Eating Less Bread?

May 24, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 24-05-2018

The South African Chamber of Baking says the recent decline in bread consumption in South Africa is attributed to a good maize harvest resulting in people switching back to porridge as it’s become more affordable.

The statistics released by the Pietermaritzburg Agency for Community Social Action reveal an increase in people buying bread when the drought pushed the maize price higher.

Executive director at the South African Chamber of Baking Geoff Penny says farmers had a good harvest resulting in the decline in bread consumption.

Penny says there isn’t much difference between white and brown bread other than the price and VAT.

“In terms of nutritional value, brown has the advantage of fibre. But the actual flour content in a local brown bread is the same white bread flour as you find in a normal white bread.”

Penny says while brown bread is zero rated for VAT, they are making a submission to government and National Treasury to request that white bread also be zero rated.
