Child welfare organisation UNICEF has expressed concern after a new report revealed that at least 60 new Rohingya babies are born in Bangladeshi refugee camps each day.
The report, published by the United Nations Children’s Fund indicates that over the last nine months, more than 16,000 Rohingya babies have been born at the informal shelters made for Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar.
The major concern relates to health and insecurities faced by the children and their mothers.
Of all babies born in the camps since the Rohingya people were forced to flee their homes after being attacked by the Myanmar army, only one in five were delivered in health facilities.
UNICEF representative in Bangladesh, Edouard Beigbeder says the situation is extremely worrying.
“These babies are taking their first breath in appalling conditions, away from home, to mothers who have survived displacement, violence, trauma and, at times. This is far from the best start in life.”
