National Freedom Party (NFP) leader Ahmed Munzoor Shaik Emam says the party wants decisive action against Israel and will be submitting a motion and resolution to be voted on by the National Assembly to downgrade the South African Embassy in that country.
Emam was addressing the media at Parliament in Cape Town on Thursday.
South Africa’s ambassador to Israel Sisa Ngombane was recalled on Monday after more than sixty Palestinians were shot dead and 2 400 injured after the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) fired live ammunition in Gaza during a protest against the inauguration of the US embassy in Jerusalem.
Emam says countries across the world including South Africa have been far too patient while people are killed and international law is ignored.
He says violence perpetuated against the Palestinians by Israel, the mass murder of innocent Palestinians including women and children are done with absolute impunity.
“We have thus decided to submit a motion and resolution to be voted on by the National Assembly, the wording of our motion is also the exact wording of the ANC resolution from the ANC’s 54th National Conference that took place in December 2017 at NASREC”
In that resolution the ANC agreed to provide practical support to the oppressed people of Palestine resolved on an immediate and unconditional downgrade of the SA embassy in Israel to a liaison office.
Emam has called on the ANC and all members of parliament (MP’s) to vote in support of the resolution.
“We are confident that all efforts will be made to ensure that we can swiftly table the motion. It is the first step but most importantly let’s take it and take it now, because that is what our people want.”
Emam says they will also engage Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Lindiwe Sisulu and President Cyril Ramaphopsa to call for the executive to implement the motion as soon as possible and unconditionally.
