The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation says the Democratic Alliance (DA) should view government’s recall of South Africa’s ambassador to Israel Sisa Ngombane, in a positive light instead of criticising it.
While the DA’s shadow minister of international relations Stevens Mokgalapa condemned the killing of Palestinians by the Israeli military, he said South Africa made a mistake in recalling Ngombane.
At least 61 Palestinians were shot dead and 2 400 injured after the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) fired live ammunition in Gaza during a protest against the inauguration of the United States embassy in Jerusalem.
The Ahmed Kathrada Foundations Neeshan Balton says the DA must clarify what their position is on the Palestinian crisis and other conflict areas across the world.
“They should have instead been seeing this in a positive light and then indicating what they think must be done in those specific areas that they are concerned about. But more importantly they need to say themselves what their position is on any of those particular areas.”
Balton says they welcome the withdrawal of ambassador Ngombane from Israel.
“It’s long overdue. We are also not sure if it’s a temporary withdrawal or whether it’s going to lead to the permanent withdrawal and the intended downgrading of that particular office. It has sent a strong signal about where South Africa stands on this issue globally.”
Balton says the opening the embassy in Jerusalem just ahead of Nakba Day shows America’s complete disregard for the anguish that 70 years of occupation evokes for Palestinians.
