Pro-Palestine Groups to Commemorate Nakba Day in Joburg & Cape Town

May 15, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 15-05-2018

Several Pro-Palestine groups are expected to protest in Johannesburg and Cape Town to commemorate the 70-year anniversary of Nakba and the decision by the US to move its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The Nakba or “catastrophe” is an annual event which both remembers the displacement of Palestinians on May 15, 1948 and protests the formation of Israel’s and its expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their homes and continued rejection of their right to return.

In Johannesburg Palestinian supporters will gather at the US Consulate in Sandton while the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) is planning a march to Parliament in Cape Town on Tuesday under the banner “The Great March of Return”.

BDS’s Kwarra Kekana says thousands of people across the world will be commemorating Nakba Day.

Kekana says the decision by the government to recall the SA ambassador in Israel come as an opportune moment for the Palestinian cause.

“We believe that this is the beginning stages in terms of downgrading the South African embassy in Israel and this comes from the 64th congress resolution of the African National Congress (ANC) last year. So one of the demands that are going to be made at this particular march is to call for the government to have that resolution of the ANC translated into government policy.
