Ramaphosa Wishes Muslims Well Over the Holy Month of Ramadan

May 13, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 13-05-2018

President Cyril Ramaphosa has wished South Africa’s Muslim community well during the Holy Month of Ramadan.

Ramadan, which starts on Thursday, depending on the sighting of the moon, is the most sacred month on the Muslim calendar and marks the time when Islam’s holy book, the Qur’an, was revealed.

It’s also a time of devotion and reflection when Muslims abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset.

Ramaphosa says the importance and benefits of the Holy Month of fasting, piety and charity extends beyond the lives of Muslims,

“It contributes to the spiritual and social wellbeing of all South Africans.  This is a month that allows all of us to reflect on – and act on – the small, thoughtful things we can do to contribute to a better society.”

Ramaphosa’s also extended his thoughts to the Muslim community of Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal, who suffered violence and tragedy in a place of worship several days ago.

Ramaphosa says he expects that the perpetrators will be brought to book and that the community of Verulam will be able to experience Ramadan as the period of peace and goodwill it is meant to be.
