A court in Germany has ruled that the city of Berlin was correct to ban a Muslim teacher from wearing her headscarf while teaching a class in a primary school.

The unnamed woman will, however, be allowed to continue teaching classed at a secondary school in the city.

The state’s so-called neutrality law, which bars the wearing of overt religious symbols and clothing for state employees on duty, weighed stronger than the right to free religious expression.

It therefore rejected the teacher’s discrimination complaint.

The rules on hijab differ between the 16 federal states in Germany.

Court spokesman Martin Dressler says that primary school children should be free of the influence that can be exerted by religious symbols.
