US Embassy move to spark fresh Palestinian anger

May 08, 2018

Thahir Asmal, Radio Islam News – 08-05-2018

Road signs with the marking of ‘US Embassy’ have been going up in Jerusalem ahead of next week’s opening of the offices in the city, which is expected to draw an angry reaction from Palestinians and Muslim world at large.

The official opening of the embassy will be held on May 14 and will be attended by a high-level American delegation.

The signs, in English, Hebrew and Arabic, were installed by workmen close to the south Jerusalem location of a US consulate building that will be repurposed as the embassy.

In December, US President Donald Trump called Jerusalem the capital of Israel and launched the process to transfer his country’s embassy to the city.

The move prompted international condemnation and triggered a wave of protests in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Trump has also confirmed that he will not attend the opening, but announced that five-person mission, including daughter Ivanka, son-in-law Jared Kushner and the US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, will be present.
