The Rohingya are an ethnic group, the majority of whom are Muslim, who have lived for centuries in the majority Buddhist Myanmar.

Currently, there are about 1.1 million Rohingya in the Southeast Asian country, facing persecution.

The South African based group, ‘Protect the Rohingya’ whose mandate is to raise awareness about the world’s most persecuted minority has set up a tour around Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town with renowned Rohingya activists, Ro Nay San Lwin and Shafiur Rehman.

Rehman is a documentary filmmaker, currently working on a film focusing on Rohingya women refugees.

He told Radio Islam that Burma is going through apartheid and a genocide.

“In terms of apartheid, of course the essential thing is the plight of the Rohingya is the denial of their nationality, and more than that the violations to their right to movement, rights to health, rights to education and restrictions on livelihoods.”

Nay San says thousands of Rohingya continue to flee Burma.

“While the Bangladeshi and Myanmar government discuss the repatriation process, Rohingya are still being locked up in their villages and they can’t leave, which is why they are still fleeing.”

On a regular basis, Radio Islam International focuses on the plight of the Rohingya.
