Saudi Arabia Issues Nigeria Hajj Threat

April 25, 2018

Thahir Asmal, Radio Islam News – 25-04-2018

Saudi Arabia has threatened to bar Nigerians from performing Hajj this year over fears they could spread the Lassa fever.

Nigeria’s National Hajj Commission is holding urgent talks to decide how to respond to the threat.

A spokesman for the organisation, Mousa Ubandawaki, confirmed the discussions will be held to discuss the next steps.

“There will be an expanded meeting of all officials from the 36 states, the Commission and officials of the Federal Government to discuss the matter.”

The disease, which comes from being exposed to rats, has killed at least 90 people in the West African state since the start of the year, with more than 1,000 cases also reported.

Symptoms of Lassa fever can include fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, abdominal pains, sore throat and facial swelling.

Close to 100,000 Nigerian Hujjaj make the trip to the holy lands each year.
