Eyewitness News is reporting that a fatal shooting on the M1 highway is linked to a Hawala money-exchange scheme allegedly operating out of the Oriental Plaza.

It’s understood a man was shot eight times near the Glenhove off-ramp in Johannesburg on Wednesday just after 5 o’ clock, while second person is believed to be in ICU.

According to EWN, three men walked through rush hour traffic specifically looking for a white Audi A5, which was at a near-standstill in traffic, shot out the tyres and opened fire on the occupants several times.

The victim is believed to be of Indian or Pakistani decent.

It’s also understood the hit may have been linked to a recent spate of kidnappings associated with Hawala Networks.

The police’s Mavela Masondo says a case of murder has been opened for investigation.

“It’s alleged that the deceased, a Pakistani national, was driving along the highway during a traffic jam when he was approached by two suspects. They then fired several shots through the window, fatally wounding the man, before speeding off in a white Elantra.”

Masondo says no arrests have been made at this stage.
