A prominent Islamic scholar says the foundation of any strong community has to be in strong marriages within those communities.
Questions have been raised many times about why it is necessary to solemnise a relationship between a man and a woman if they already love each and are living together like any other married couple that tied the knot in a masjid, church or synagogue.
Radio Islam Ml Sulaimaan Ravat says there is a big difference between being formally married and common law unions.
“Allah wants us to formalise this relationship by taking His name, in His house so that we take it seriously and that we know are accountable of to Him for how we treat our spouse.”
Ml Ravat says when a boy and girl get married, it’s not just an ordinary union, but rather the unification of two families.
“Marriages build those communities and those communities build the ummah. So the prosperity of the Ummah, the prosperity of humanity is dependent on the success of marriages. Because you can never build a community and you can never be united until you are united from the bottom up. Unity doesn’t happen from the top down.”
Ml Ravat says when people just decide to live together as husband and wife without getting married, there isn’t a serious commitment hinged on the undertaking to a greater being.
