Ahed Tamimi Reaches Plea Bargain to Serve 8 Months in Israeli Jail

March 22, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 22-03-2018

Palestinian teen Ahed Tamimi has reached a plea agreement in which the activist will only spend eight months in an Israeli prison.

The military court handling her case approved the plea agreement on Wednesday, making it an official court order.

According to Israeli newspaper Haaretz, as part of the agreement, the 17-year-old pleaded guilty to four counts of assault. In addition to the eight month jail sentence, Tamimi has to pay a fine of 5,000 shekels (R 17,100).

Tamimi was arrested and charged on 15 December 2017 with stone-throwing and attacking soldiers after a video showing her slapping Israeli soldiers and telling them to leave her property went viral. Israeli soldiers had invaded her home and also shot her cousin Mohammed Tamimi in the head.

The paper also reports that plea agreements were reached with Nur and Nariman Tamimi, Ahed Tamimi’s cousin and mother, both of whom were involved in the videotaping of slapping of the Israeli soldier.

Tamimi’s lawyer, Gaby Lasky, confirmed that a plea agreement had been reached.

“The fact that the plea agreement provides for the dropping of all of counts of the indictment that made it possible to detain her until the end of legal proceedings is proof that Tamimi’s arrest in the middle of the night and the legal proceedings against her were steps designed to settle scores.”

Tamimi’s case has gained international support, with international NGOs, British politicians and the UN calling for her release. An online petition protesting her imprisonment has been signed by more than 1.7 million people.
