The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it is appalled by the sewage leaks at the Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg which are causing smells that are disturbing both staff and patients.
The party says it visited the hospital on Monday after receiving complaints about smelly sewage leaks outside the hospital building.
It says while a manhole was cordoned off last week in order to clean the pipes, there was a visible sewage leak near the hospital tuck shop.
The DA’s Jack Bloom says the problem stems from old pipes which leads to frequent leaks and blockages.
“Last year Infrastructure Development MEC Jacob Mamabolo said that there were 65 680 identified building problems at the hospital. It is estimated that R310 million is needed to fix all the faults, but only R6.96 million was budgeted in the financial year ending on 31 March for mechanical and electrical maintenance, which is grossly inadequate.”
