Tiger Brands says immediate action and corrective steps have been taken to address the Listeriosis outbreak.
Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi on Sunday revealed the origin of the listeriosis outbreak in South Africa had been traced to polony from the Enterprise Foods factory in Polokwane.
At least 180 people have died from Listeriosis since the outbreak was detected early last year.
Tiger Brands CEO Lawrence MacDougall says despite the outbreak, there are strict controls in place.
“Enterprise Foods follows stringent protocols for the manufacture of quality food products. This includes monitoring and testing for the detection and management of pathogens, viruses and bacteria including Listeria.
MacDougall says low levels of Listeria were found on the 14th of February.
He has given the assurance that its dealing with the situation as a matter of urgency and that food safety remains its top priority, there no direct link between Tiger Brands products and the deaths of at least 180 people and does not take responsibility.
“We took immediate precautionary measures which included immediately halting production of the affected product. Quarantine all affected product that we had within our distribution centre and withdraw all the affected product batch manufactured on that certain date from the trade.
The deadly Listeria outbreak was linked to Enterprise factories in Polokwane and Germiston.
At the same time Mozambique has announced its banned imports of processed meat products from South Africa while says Zambia’s SA meat products are being recalled from stores across the country.
