Despite the inclement weather, hundreds of residents took advantage of the free health screening services offered by professionals at the annual Tiba Services for the Blind Health Day in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg.
The health day in conjunction with the Ahmed Kathrada Hopsital, Islamic Medical Association (IMA) and Muslim Aids Programme (MAP) took place at the TIBA Centre in Ext 13 on Sunday with a number of services and health professionals in attendance to consult and advise patients on their health care at no cost.
Services included Body Mass Index (BMI) assessments, blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure testing and a consultation from registered medical practitioners on the patients overall wellbeing.
There were also dentistry and eye screening services at the health day.
Tiba Chairman Boetie Eshak says the Tiba Health Day is to provide essential health services to the community of Lenasia and urge people to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
“It was initiated 9 years ago when we had the first anniversary of the Tiba Centre. We felt the community has been very supportive, so what better way of giving back to the community than having a free health day.”
Eshak says the social services grant provided by the government is not enough to maintain the organization and has urged the community especially the youth to continue assisting with its activities and donating to the NGO which has been in existence for over 40 years.
