Ramaphosa: SA Must Take Full Advantage of Rapid Technological Change

February 16, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 16-02-2018

Newly elected President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa’s prosperity depends on the country’s ability to take full advantage of rapid technological change.

Ramaphosa delivered his much-anticipated maiden State of the Nation (Sona) address in Parliament on Friday, which was well received by opposition parties.

The new president made many promises and plans to ensure South Africa embraces the technological age.

Ramaphosa says the country urgently needs to develop capabilities in the areas of science, technology and innovation.

“We will soon establish a Digital Industrial Revolution Commission, which will include the private sector and civil society, to ensure that our country is in a position to seize the opportunities and manage the challenges of rapid advances in information and communication technology.’

Ramaphosa says the drive towards the digital industrial revolution will be underpinned by the availability of efficient networks.

“We will finalise our engagements with the telecommunications industry and other stakeholders to ensure that the allocation of spectrum reduces barriers to entry, promotes competition and reduces the cost to consumers.”

The promise of the allocation of additional spectrum will be most welcomed by network service providers who are under tremendous pressure to bring down the cost of data in line with global standards.
