Parliament All Set for Election of New SA President

Now that President Jacob has resigned as president of South Africa, Parliament is all set to elect a new leader for the country.

Zuma resigned on Wednesday night following his recalling by the African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) and weeks of speculation about his future as president.

The National Assembly’s 400 MPs will on Thursday vote for the country’s new leader under the guidance of Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng.

Opposition parties can field their own candidates in which case, voting will be by secret ballot.

Once elected, Ramaphosa will be sworn in. It will be up to him to choose his deputy president.

This afternoon, Cyril Ramaphosa will be formally elected and sworn in as South Africa’s 5th president of the democratic era.

The election will be presided over by Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng.

It will be up to Ramaphosa to choose his deputy president.

Parliaments programme committee has confirmed the State of the Nation address will take place on Friday night, the debate on the address is set down for Monday and Ramaphosa’s reply on Tuesday.

The budget speech is on target for Wednesday.
