Jacob Zuma Resigns as President of South Africa

February 14, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 14-02-2018

Jacob Zuma has resigned as the President of South Africa with immediate effect.

Zuma addressed the media late on Wednesday night saying his decision follows his recalling by the African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) and weeks of speculation about his future as president.

Zuma says the ANC is the party of whose nomination he became a candidate for the Presidency of South Africa.

“I have therefore come to the decision to resign as president with immediate effect. Even though I disagree with the decision of the leadership of my organization. I have always been a disciplined member of the ANC.”

Zuma says he is forever indebted to the party and that he respects its fight for equality.

“I respect each and every member of the ANC and its work as a liberation movement. As I leave, I will continue to serve the people of South Africa as well as the ANC.”

The ANC says the decision by Zuma is consistent with what he had said earlier on Wednesday that he has never and will never defy his organisation, the ANC and remains a disciplined member of the party.

ANC Deputy Secreatry General Jesse Duarte extended the party’s gratitude to Zuma for having served the country in this capacity for the last nine years, particularly for the contribution he has made to progress in improving the lives of ordinary South Africans.
