Following a marathon 13-hour closed-door special meeting, The African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) has decided to recall President Jacob Zuma as state president of South Africa.
The party started their meeting at 2pm at the Saint Georges Hotel in Irene in Pretoria on Monday following days of discussions between ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa and Zuma.
Eyewitness News reports that when Ramaphosa and Secretary-General Ace Magashule went to tell Zuma that the NEC wants him to resign or face being recalled-he told them to “Do what they want to do”.
The NEC then deliberated further until it decided to recall Zuma.
Earlier, Business Day reported that Zuma had requested three months’ “notice”, after which he would resign unconditionally telling ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa he will use the 3 months to “introduce him” to international bodies such as African Union, United Nations and the Brics bloc of countries.
It says sources sceptical of his motives warned Zuma wanted to complete deals favourable to his family and friends before leaving the Union Buildings.
On Sunday Ramaphosa announced, in his address at the launch of the ANC’s Nelson Mandela centenary celebration in Cape Town, that the matter would be resolved at Monday’s NEC meeting.
There has been no official announcement from ANC officials.
