Lenasia Calm After Volatile Protests

January 23, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 23-01-2018

The situation at the Thembelihle informal settlement in Lenasia remains calm this morning following volatile protests.

Residents on Monday blocked roads with rocks, burning tyres and stoned passing motorists including smashing the driver’s window of a JMPD vehicle.

A hardware shop was also reportedly looted by some of the protesting residents.

It’s understood the residents are protesting over basic service delivery issues including the lack of housing.

The JMPD’s Wayne Minnaar says they are monitoring the situation.

“The situation along the K43 in Lenasia is calm this morning. The situation was very volatile last night. There was vehicles damaged as protestors were throwing stones, but officers are monitoring.”

Minnaar says there are currently no protests at the moment.
