SA Woman Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison in Saudi Arabia

January 19, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 19-01-2018

A 25-year-old South African woman from Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape has reportedly been sentenced to three years in Jail in Saudi Arabia.

Yumna Desai who was studying in Medina was arrested along with her sister and two brothers in November almost two years ago, after they returned to the kingdom following their Ramadan break in South Africa.

It’s believed the siblings were detained under the security act of Saudi Arabia after being accused of supporting different political groups.

Yumna’s siblings were released last year and are back in South Africa while she remained in incarcerated.

In a statement Yumna’s father Ml Nazier Desai says they are shocked by the judgment and claim Yumna has been falsely accused.

“Inspite of her dismissing these false charges and without any evidence being presented for these accusations against her, she has been sentenced to three years and two months. Through the grace of Allāh, the two-years and two-months that she has spent in detention has left her with a remaining one-year to serve.”

Yumna has reportedly shared her sentiments after being sentenced.

“Today I stand in your court, tomorrow, we will all stand in the court of Allah.”

Desai has thanked the community for their support throughout the daunting times, and urged people to continue making dua that Allah reunites her soon with her family.
