Joburg Water: Earthy Taste Detected in Drinking Water Not Harmful

January 15, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 15-01-2018

Johannesburg Water says an earthy tasting compound detected in the drinking water supplied to residents of Johannesburg is not harmful.

In a statement, Joburg water says it was notified by Rand Water that a compound called geosmin has manifested itself in the portable water supply.

It says the earthy taste occurs infrequently and doesn’t last long.

“Typically during warm periods, the raw water source being the Vaal Dam experiences blue green algae resulting in un-welcomed taste and odour constituents in the drinking water. The substance causing these odours are not harmful to human health.”

Joburg Water says taste and odour problems are not unique to the Rand Water’s area of supply, but are experiences worldwide.
