Cyril Ramaphosa has been elected as the new President of the African National Congress (ANC) for the next five years and will lead the party into the 2019 general elections.
The results were announced at the 54th national conference at Nasrec in Soweto on Monday after a delay.
Ramaphosa is the party’s 14th president and replaces Jacob Zuma who has held the position since 2012.
Ramaphosa received 2,440 votes, while his rival Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma received 2,261 votes
David Mabuza has been elected deputy president with a total vote count of 2,538 compared to Lindiwe Sisulu’s 2,159 votes.
Former secretary general Gwede Mantashe is now the new national chairperson having obtained 2,418 votes while Nathi Mthethwa received 2,269.
Ace Magashule takes the position of secretary-general of the ANC after garnering 2,360 votes compared to 2,336 votes obtained by Senzo Mchunu.
Jessie Duarte has retained her position as deputy secretary general with 2,474 votes compared to 2,213 for Zingiswa Losi.
The new treasurer general of the ANC is Paul Mashatile who obtained 2,517 votes versus Maite Nkoana-Mashabane’s 2,178.
A total of 4,776 delegates cast their ballots in the early hours of Monday to elect the new top 6 leadership of the ANC.
