ANC Western Cape Calls for Downgrade of SA Embassy in Israel

December 14, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 14-12-2017

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Western Cape has joined various civil society organizations and religious leaders calling for the downgrade of the South African Embassy in Israel demanding a firm response by South Africa against Israel’s violations of international law and US President Donald Trump’s announcement on Jerusalem.

The party was speaking at Parliament on Wednesday where various religious leaders met to protest against US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital city.

Trump has reversed decades of US policy and recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel despite warnings from around the world that the gesture further drives a wedge between Israel and the Palestinians.

Provincial secretary Faiez Jacobs says the impunity with which Trump and Israel have behaved, ignoring international law, will likely lead to bloodshed and conflict.

“We have for too long allowed Israel to act with impunity, with no consequence. We have heard the call from Hamas, Fatah, Leila Khaled, the Palestinian ambassador and Palestinians for this downgrade and we aim to see it materialize as soon as possible and will make sure that the ANC’s national conference resolve on this matter.”

Jacobs says the ANC in the Western Cape, Gauteng ANC, Northern Cape ANC, North West ANC, Mpumalanga ANC, Eastern Cape ANC and other provinces, supports the downgrade of diplomatic relations with Israel.
