Following a number of accidents on the N12 highway near Lenasia after rock throwing and placing, residents of Lenasia and surrounds are rallying together to make the stretch of road safer for motorists.
Criminals use the stretch of highway in an attempt to hijack motorists by placing rocks on the road or throwing rocks from the overhead bridge to get cars to stop.
Several motorists have been hijacked and even lost their lives in accidents as a result of the stone-throwing modus operandi.
While the Johannesburg Metro Police Department says it has increased patrols on the N12 West freeway Lenasia Active Citizenry’s Khalil Mohammad says it’s not enough.
“There has been a number accidents, robberies on the N12. We as a community have now taken the initiative to clean up any rocks and debris on the road to make it safe for motorists that are travelling on the N12.”
Volunteers will be meeting at the Engen Service Station on Nirvana Drive in Lenasia on Sunday 10 December at 8am ahead of the clean-up operation.
