The Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria has agreed to dedicate an area in the building for a Muslim prayer facility following a complaint with the CRL Rights Commission.
Officials from the hospital met with representatives from the Muslim community on Thursday to discuss a way forward following a request for a dedicated prayer facility.
The Muslim community say they are tired of praying in corners and other secluded spots they could find around the hospital and filed a complaint with CRL Rights Commission to intervene in the matter when the hospital said the current prayer facilities which are shared by all religious groups are adequate.
Social activist Yusuf Abramjee says he is delighted the matter has been resolved and has written a letter to the CRL Commission officially withdrawing the complaint.
“We visited the hospital and were taken on a walkabout where we’ve see a number of areas. We’ve decided that we will resolve to take one or two specific areas which have been identified. The Muslim community of Pretoria will cover the costs of the salaah facility and we hope to have it up and running by the end of January.”
