The Democratic Alliance (DA) says President Jacob Zuma must be charged for the 783 counts of corruption, fraud, money-laundering and racketeering as soon as possible.
The party says it has filed submissions in line with the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) deadline of 30th November arguing as to why Zuma should be charged.
In a statement the DA’s Mmusi Maimane says because the charges against Zuma were irrationally dropped by the NPA in April 2009, prosecution must therefore continue without delay.
“However, in the unlikely event that President Zuma does in fact have materially new and relevant submissions to make, these ought to be considered by a court of law, not the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP), Advocate Shaun Abrahams.”
Maimane says while Zuma has already been afforded the opportunity to make representations which were rejected, any fresh representations submitted by the President will have to be reviewed by the party before it decides on a way forward.
“Therefore we have requested the NPA shares these representations with all interested parties – including the DA – and that those interested parties are given an opportunity of 14 calendar days to comment on such representations.”
The DA has also questioned the independence and impartiality of National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) saying it’s conduct has been questionable on numerous occasions in the Zuma matter.
