Three people have been injured after the roof of a mosque collapsed on worshippers in Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal.
It’s understood members of Reaction Unit South Africa were called out to the scene after receiving multiple calls from the public and businesses reporting a loud noise at the mosque.
Officials say upon arrival it was established that as worshippers were exiting the mosque after noon prayers when the entire roof collapsed trapping several under the rubble.
Reaction Unit South Africa’s Prem Balram says the circumstances surrounding the structural collapse has yet to be established.
“Upon arrival we were informed that a roof had collapsed and three worshippers were trapped. Paramedics and reaction officers entered the building and freed one of the worshippers, two others were free by a bystander. According to the Moulana at the mosque, the roof collapsed after a structural damage. This could not be confirmed. The worshippers were treated on scene and transported to a local hospital.”
Bala says the SAPS K9 Search and Rescue unit were called to scene and no others worshipper’s were found to be trapped under the rubble.
